During the winter months, many older people can feel isolated if they do not feel able to get out and about safely due to the weather and the risk a fall may bring. Having reduced mobility can make people feel more vulnerable, so they chose not to venture out, in effect reducing the risk to themselves of a fall. The downside to this is that mentally, becoming socially isolated can also impact on your mental and physical well-being.
We have the opportunity to help. Short-stay respite care is available at St Luke's. Buy coming to stay with us for ten days or a couple of weeks, we can help build a person's independence in a number of ways:
Working with our Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy team, we can help build up your mobility, show you safe ways to do everyday things such as getting up out of a chair or your bed, how to safely lift things like a kettle or cooking pot so as not to put yourself in harms way.
Having the opportunity to meet other people like yourself at St Luke's Hospital. With our cafe, dining rooms, living rooms and garden room - there are many social spaces for you to come and meet new people, like you. We also welcome your visitors - friends and family to come and take part in our activities from arts and crafts, to foodie experiences and gentle group exercise classes. You never feel you have to be alone.
Similar our rehabilitation service provides an excellent, proven way to get back on your feet following a hospital stay for a knee or hip replacement, for example.
