Its world Sleep Day

Sleep is vital for recovery because it enables the body to repair, boost the immune system, and consolidate memory while regulating hormones that control appetite and stress. Sleep acts as a necessary "reset" for both mental and physical health, allowing for muscle repair, energy restoration, and improved emotional wellbeing.
Many of us ignore the importance of sleep, especially when we are younger and ‘burn the candle at both ends’. Unfortunately though, we ignore the importance of sleep at our peril. A lack of sleep or poor sleep can lead to a number of physical and psychological issues that in the long term can really badly affect our health!
At Luke’s Hospital, we certainly understand the importance of good sleep for our rehabilitation patients who may be recovering from surgery or an illness and our long-term residents who have made St Luke’s their home for life.
Key to good sleep is often our bed and mattress in particular. Here at St Luke’s we have invested in our mattress and bed options to ensure everyone can get the best sleep possible. There are mattresses that with the assistance of our electric beds can move very slightly every 20 minutes to ensure patients do not get pressure sores. We also have beds that can be adjusted in multiple ways to help place that person in the most comfortable position by raising their head or gently lifting their knees. The team go to a lot of trouble to ensure everyone has the right bed and mattress for each person in our care.
