We are all in a buzz about World Bee Day 2026

For millennia, bees and people have shared a close and evolving connection, shaped by the ways communities across the world have relied on bees for food and livelihoods, with bees often becoming part of their cultural identity. From honey hunting to a large variety of beekeeping systems, this relationship has continually adapted to different environments, technologies, and socio-cultural needs.

World Bee Day 2026 focuses on how humans and bees have been working together to nourish and sustain people and the environment. Did you know, bees are responsible for pollinating the majority of our crops here in the UK? That’s a lot of flowers to visit every year!

So how can we help bees thrive?  Here are some easy steps we follow here in our gardens at St Luke’s Hospital:

  • Plant pollinating flowers – add as many different kinds of flowers into your garden to help provide bees with many food resources.  Plants like lavender also create wonderful smells for us to enjoy too.

  • Why not share some photos of your garden to inspire others? From a few plant pots on your windowsill to a whole garden of flowers, we love the sight of a vibrant garden buzzing with bees and other pollinators.  Why not help inspire others by posting some photos of your garden today?

  • Add some very easy to make bee houses to your garden for solitary bees. Providing shelter and somewhere safe for bees helps build their numbers.  Check out how to build a bee house on the Wildlife Trust website https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-make-bee-hotel

Here are some of the beautiful bee friendly flowers we have at St Luke's in our garden.
